The indicator measures the proportion of businesses that were innovation active during the survey period.
Source of Data:
This indicator is sourced from the UK Innovation Survey (UKIS).
The UKIS is conducted, on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The UKIS samples around 3,000 enterprises, based in Scotland, with ten or more employees. The survey is voluntary – generally responses are received from around 1,500 businesses based in Scotland.
Definitions:
The UKIS is carried out biennially and businesses are asked to report on their innovation activities in the preceding three-year period – the latest survey for 2021 asks businesses about their innovation activities in the 2018-2020 period.
The innovation active definition includes any of the following activities, if they occurred during the survey period:
1. The introduction of a new or significantly improved product (good or service) or process; (Product and/or Process Innovation Activities)
2. Engagement in innovation projects not yet complete, scaled back, or abandoned; (Ongoing/Scaled back/Abandoned Innovation Activities)
3. New and significantly improved forms of organisation, business structures or practices, and marketing concepts or strategies (Wider Innovation Activities)

Criteria for Change:
This evaluation is based on: any difference in the gap within +/- 3 percentage points of last period's figure suggests that the position is more likely to be maintaining than showing any change. An increase of 3 percentage points or more suggests the position is improving; whereas a decrease of 3 percentage points or more suggests the position is worsening.
