This indicator measures the proportion of employees aged 16-64 who reported receiving job related training within the last 3 months.

The data for this indicator are gathered through the Annual Population Survey (APS). APS is the largest annual household survey in Scotland and provides information about individuals' personal circumstances and their work. It is carried out by the Office for National Statistics.

Important note:  In August 2021, ONS Annual Population Survey (APS) responses for periods April 2019-March 2020 onwards have been weighted to new populations derived using growth rates from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) Real Time Information (RTI) to allow for different trends during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This new weighting methodology gives improved estimates of both rates and levels following the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The measurement is based on an estimate of the number of people in employment aged 16-64 who have reported receiving job related training within the last 3 months.

The current confidence interval around the estimate from the APS is ±0.8%.

Future Issues or Reviews:

Labour market statistics are revised periodically in line with the release of more up-to-date mid-year population estimates. The most recent revision took place in August 2021, with data in this series being reweighted back to April 2019-March 2020.

Definitions

The number of people in employment in Scotland consists of people aged 16 years and over who did one hour or more of paid work per week and those who had a job that they were temporarily away from. People in employment who reported that they have received job related training are those aged between 16 and 64 who have taken part in education or training connected with their job and which has taken place within 3 months of the survey reference date.

Criteria for Change

This evaluation is based on:

• Any difference within +/- 1.0 percentage points of last year's figure suggests that the position is more likely to be maintaining than showing any change.
• An increase of 1.0 percentage points or more suggests the position is improving;
• A decrease of 1.0 percentage points or more suggests the position is worsening.
