Description:

This indicator measures the proportion of residential and non-residential premises where superfast broadband is available.

Source of Data:

The data for this indicator is provided by Ofcom, and published annually in Ofcom’s Connected Nations Report.

Ofcom collect data on coverage of fixed broadband services from broadband network operators. The data is matched to a premise list derived from the Ordnance Survey (OS) Addressbase product, and combined with additional geographic classifications from the ONS National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL) and Urban-Rural Classification to produce final figures.

Further information can be found at: The Ofcom website.

Definitions:

Ofcom defines “superfast” as broadband services that deliver a download speed of at least 30 Mbit/s.

Criteria for Change:

This evaluation is based on:

  • any difference within +/- 1 percentage point of last year's figure suggests that the position is more likely to be maintaining than showing any change.
  • An increase of 1 percentage point or more suggests the position is improving.
  • a decrease of 1 percentage point or more suggests the position is worsening.
